Why book this test

A clearer sense of your ovarian reserve

AMH is produced by the small follicles in your ovaries, so it gives a useful indication of your ovarian reserve. Checking it can help you plan ahead, whether you are thinking about starting a family later, considering egg freezing, or simply want to understand where your levels sit for your age.

Helpful for planning

A useful input if you are weighing up the timing of a family, or considering egg freezing and want a starting point.

A clear, simple result

Your report shows your AMH level against the typical range for your age, in plain English, with any next steps.

A doctor if you want one

Prefer to talk it through? Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your result and next steps.

Who it is for

You might consider this if

An AMH test can be a helpful step in a few different situations.

You are thinking about starting a family, now or later
You are considering egg freezing and want a baseline
You want to understand your ovarian reserve for your age
You are approaching or exploring perimenopause
A doctor has suggested checking your AMH
You are investigating conditions such as PCOS with a clinician

Important: AMH does not count your remaining eggs or predict your chance of getting pregnant. It shows whether your level is within the typical range for your age. For fertility planning, discuss your result with a doctor.

FAQ

Common questions about the AMH test

How much is the AMH blood test?

£124 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, the AMH measurement, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

What does AMH tell me?

AMH is a marker of ovarian reserve. Your result shows whether your AMH level is within the typical range for your age. It does not count your remaining eggs and does not predict your chance of getting pregnant, so it is best used as one piece of a wider picture.

Can AMH predict whether I can get pregnant?

No. AMH gives an indication of ovarian reserve for your age, but it cannot tell you your egg quality or your likelihood of conceiving. If fertility is your main question, we would recommend discussing your result and options with a doctor.

Do I need to time it with my cycle?

In most cases no, AMH is relatively stable across the menstrual cycle, so it can usually be measured at any time. If you are on hormonal contraception, mention it when you book, as it can lower AMH readings and we can advise.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

Do I need to fast before the test?

No fasting is needed. We will confirm anything specific to your appointment when you book.

How quickly will I get my result?

Your report is emailed to you once the laboratory has processed the sample. Ask us when you book and we will give you a clearer idea of timing.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Can a doctor talk me through my result?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your result and next steps.

Want a doctor to explain the result?

AMH is most useful alongside your age, plans and history. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your result means and any next steps.

Important: The AMH test indicates whether your AMH level is within the typical range for your age. It does not indicate your remaining viable egg count and does not predict your chance of becoming pregnant. Results are most useful when reviewed alongside your age, history and plans by a doctor. We recommend discussing your result with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before making decisions based on it. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice.
