Long-lasting relief from knee osteoarthritis
Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel for knee osteoarthritis, made of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. It's injected once into the knee joint, where it integrates with the joint lining (synovium). This cushions the joint, reduces stiffness and eases pain.
Steroid and hyaluronic acid injections are gradually broken down by the body, so their effect fades and they need repeating. Arthrosamid® is non-biodegradable. It stays in the joint, which is why a single injection typically gives two to three years or more of relief.
It's a minimally invasive option for people who want to stay active, have found other injections don't last, or want to put off a knee replacement for as long as possible. There's no general anaesthetic and no hospital stay, and most people walk out of the clinic the same day.
Arthrosamid® may suit you if any of these apply
A gel that stays where it's needed
Integrates with the joint
After injection, the gel becomes part of the knee's joint lining, the tissue that's often inflamed and thickened in osteoarthritis.
Cushions and softens
The lining becomes more elastic, acting as a cushion inside the joint. That helps reduce pain and stiffness when you move.
Doesn't wear off
Because the body doesn't break it down, the effect doesn't fade in months like steroid or hyaluronic acid can.

Common questions about Arthrosamid®
How much does Arthrosamid® cost in Cardiff?
Arthrosamid® at Acorn is £2,700 for one knee, all-inclusive, including antibiotic cover, the ultrasound-guided injection and aftercare. The first step, a 10-minute Suitability Call with our consultant, is free.
What is Arthrosamid®?
Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel made of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. Once injected into the knee it integrates with the joint lining (synovium), cushioning the joint and easing pain and stiffness. Unlike steroid or hyaluronic acid, it isn't broken down by the body, which is why the effect lasts much longer.
How long does Arthrosamid® last?
Most patients get 2–3 years or more of relief from a single injection. Because the gel is non-biodegradable it stays in the joint, and clinical studies have followed patients for several years after treatment.
When will I feel the benefit?
The effect builds gradually. Most people notice improvement over 4–12 weeks as the gel integrates with the joint lining. Some notice a difference sooner.
How is it different from steroid or hyaluronic acid?
Steroid calms inflammation for around 3–6 months and hyaluronic acid lubricates the joint for around 6–12 months, but the body breaks both down, so they need repeating. Arthrosamid® stays in the joint, so one injection can give years of relief. Steroid and HA are cheaper up front, and we'll always tell you honestly if one of those is the better first step.
Am I suitable for Arthrosamid®?
It's designed for knee osteoarthritis, from mild to more advanced. It may not be suitable if you have an infection in or around the knee, a knee replacement in that knee, or have had recent keyhole surgery on it. The free Suitability Call is where we check this, looking at your symptoms, history and any previous scans.
Do I need a referral?
Yes, a referral is required for all injections, including Arthrosamid®. It can come from your GP, physiotherapist or consultant. Please email it to contact@acornprivateclinic.co.uk before your appointment. If you don't have one yet, mention it on your free Suitability Call and we'll advise on the next step.
Is the injection painful?
Most people find it no worse than a standard knee injection. The skin is numbed with local anaesthetic, and the injection itself only takes a few minutes. Your knee may feel full, achy or a little swollen for a few days afterwards.
What are the side effects?
The most common are temporary pain, swelling or stiffness in the knee for a few days after the injection. Infection is rare, and antibiotic cover is included in the price to reduce the risk further. We'll go through the risks that apply to you before you decide.
Can I still have a knee replacement later?
Having Arthrosamid® doesn't rule out a knee replacement in future. Many patients use it to put surgery off for as long as possible. If you're already under a surgeon, it's worth mentioning to them too.
Can I have both knees treated?
Often, yes. Let us know on your Suitability Call and we'll confirm whether both knees are suitable and the price for treating both.
Is Arthrosamid® covered by health insurance?
Cover varies between insurers and policies, and many don't include it, so most patients self-fund. Check with your insurer before booking, and ask for an authorisation code if they will cover it.
Who performs the injection?
A consultant radiologist with specialist musculoskeletal ultrasound expertise. The needle is guided on live ultrasound so the gel is placed precisely within the joint, in a sterile procedure room.
Where can I get Arthrosamid® near Cardiff?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, Stanwell Road, CF64 2AD), 10 minutes from Cardiff city centre with free street parking. Patients travel to us from across South Wales and the South West of England.
