Consultation & injection
The consultation as above, plus a targeted steroid injection in the same visit where it will help. Often used for early trigger finger or carpal tunnel, and can settle symptoms without the need for surgery.
Carpal tunnel release
Decompression of the median nerve to relieve the tingling, numbness and night-time pain of carpal tunnel syndrome. Done under local anaesthetic, one hand or both. Full detail is on the dedicated page.
Trigger finger release
Frees a finger that catches, clicks or locks in a bent position, by releasing the tight tendon pulley. Priced by the number of fingers treated: £1,150 (one), £1,850 (two), £2,700 (three), £3,550 (four).
Dupuytren's surgery
Releases fingers that have curled towards the palm from thickened cords of tissue, restoring movement. Priced by the number of fingers treated: £1,150 (one), £1,850 (two), £2,700 (three), £3,550 (four).
Cyst removal
Removal of a mucous (finger) or dermoid (skin) cyst, taken out with its root to reduce the chance of it coming back. Priced from £600, confirmed at your consultation.

Hand symptoms overlap. Tingling fingers can be carpal tunnel or a trapped nerve higher up, a lump can be a ganglion or something else, and a stiff finger is not always a trigger finger. The £150 consultation settles what is actually going on, and whether an operation is even the right answer, before you commit to anything.

Before your surgery
There is very little to do. Your surgeon may ask you to pause blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen for a few days beforehand, and he will tell you at the consultation if that applies to you. Wear something loose that goes on and off easily over the hand and wrist.
Afterwards
Keep the hand elevated for the first day or two to settle swelling. Most office workers are back within a couple of days, while heavier manual work usually waits three to six weeks. Your surgeon will give you exact advice for your procedure at the review.

The hand consultation is £150, or £350 if a steroid injection is given in the same visit. Surgery is priced from there: carpal tunnel release from £1,495 (both hands £2,950), trigger finger and Dupuytren's from £1,150 per finger, and cyst removal from £600. Your exact, all-inclusive fee is confirmed at your consultation before anything is booked.
Do I need a consultation before surgery?
Yes. Every hand procedure follows a £150 consultation with the surgeon. Hand symptoms overlap and the fee depends on exactly what is found, so we do not book an operation until you have been examined in person, the diagnosis is confirmed, and you have a firm price. It is also your chance to ask everything and to decide whether surgery is right for you at all.
Is hand surgery done under general anaesthetic?
No. Carpal tunnel, trigger finger, Dupuytren's and ganglion surgery here are done under local anaesthetic only. You are awake, there is no fasting, and most people drive themselves home and are back at a desk within a day or two.
What hand conditions do you treat?
Carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, Dupuytren's contracture, ganglion and other hand cysts, thumb-base pain, nerve compression and tendon problems, among others. If you are not sure your problem fits, book a consultation and Mr Maclean will advise.

Why do trigger finger and Dupuytren's have several prices?
Because the fee depends on how many fingers are treated in the same visit. Trigger finger and Dupuytren's start at £1,150 for one finger and rise to £3,550 for four. Cyst removal (mucous or dermoid) is separate, from £600. Your surgeon confirms which applies to you at the consultation.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book the consultation yourself, online or by calling 029 2199 9300. If you have had nerve conduction studies or scans done elsewhere, bring the results with you.
How quickly can I be seen, and how long is recovery?

Your consultation can be at either clinic, Penarth or Cowbridge, whichever is easier to reach. The surgery itself is carried out at Penarth, 13 Washington Buildings, Stanwell Road, CF64 2AD, about 10 minutes from Cardiff city centre.
