What we commonly find

Sports injuries are almost always soft-tissue — tendons, ligaments, muscles — which is exactly what ultrasound is best at.

Rotator cuff tear

Shoulder — throwing, swimming sports.

Tennis & golfer's elbow

Racket sports, golf, lifting.

Hamstring tear

Sprinting, kicking sports.

Calf strain (tennis leg)

Tennis, jumping, running over 40.

Plantar fasciitis & Achilles

Runners, triathletes.

Ankle ligament sprain

Football, netball, basketball.

If injection therapy (cortisone, PRP, hyaluronic acid) is appropriate, we can perform it in the same visit. Excellent for racket/jumping/lifting sports.

Before your scan

Preparation

No preparation needed

How to prepare

Wear loose sports clothing easy access to the injured area.
Eat and drink normally no fasting required.
Bring imaging if you have it X-rays, MRI from any previous assessment.
Note the injury timeline when, what activity, how it progressed.

No special prep. Just turn up ready to be examined — we work around the injured area.

If you can't put weight on the leg or move the joint, that's fine — we adapt the scan.

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about sports injury ultrasound

How much does a sports injury ultrasound cost?

£260 all-inclusive.

Do I need a referral?

No — self-refer.

Same-day appointments?

Often available — sports injuries need fast diagnosis. Call 029 2199 9300.

Can I get treatment in the same visit?

Yes — if appropriate, we offer same-visit cortisone injection, PRP, hyaluronic acid, or barbotage. See injection therapy.

Ultrasound vs MRI for sports injuries?

Ultrasound is dynamic, fast, repeatable, excellent for tendons and muscles. MRI is best for cartilage, bone, deep structures (ACL, labrum, meniscus). Many sports injuries start with ultrasound; if more detail is needed we can advise on our private MRI.

How long until I can return to sport?

Depends on injury grade and location. Your consultant gives a specific recovery timeline based on the scan findings.

Do you do physio?

We do not offer physio directly but can recommend trusted physiotherapists for rehab.

Is the scan painful?

No — gentle probe pressure. We avoid the most tender area.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes — no radiation.

Will I get a written report?

Yes — immediate verbal results plus written report in 24-48 hours.

Can ultrasound find ACL tears?

Limited — the ACL is deep inside the knee. We can see secondary signs (joint effusion) but MRI is the test of choice for ACL.

Where do I go?
