Why book this test

Put a name to how you have been feeling

The thyroid drives your metabolism, so when it is over or underactive it can affect your weight, energy, mood, temperature and sleep. This test measures the five markers that show how it is working, including the antibodies behind common autoimmune thyroid conditions, giving you and your doctor a clear starting point.

A fuller thyroid picture

Not just TSH, but free T4 and free T3 plus two antibodies, so an underactive, overactive or autoimmune pattern is easier to spot.

A report you can read

Your results come with reference ranges and plain-English notes, with anything out of range flagged so it is easy to spot.

Who it is for

Worth checking if you recognise these

This test is a sensible step if you have symptoms that a thyroid problem can cause.

Weight changes you cannot explain
Tiredness or low energy that will not shift
Feeling the cold, or unusually hot
Trouble sleeping, or feeling wired
Hair thinning, dry skin or low mood
A racing heart or feeling shaky

These symptoms can have many causes and should be reviewed by a doctor. This test helps find a cause; it does not replace medical assessment.

Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

FAQ

Common questions about the thyroid blood test

How much is the Thyroid Health blood test?

£95 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, all five markers, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

Which markers does it test?

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (free T4), free tri-iodothyronine (free T3), and two thyroid antibodies: anti-thyroglobulin (Anti-TG) and anti-thyroid peroxidase (Anti-TPO).

Why include thyroid antibodies?

The antibodies help identify autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto's or Graves' disease, which are common causes of an underactive or overactive thyroid. Testing them alongside TSH, T4 and T3 gives a fuller picture than hormone levels alone.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

Do I need to fast or prepare?

No fasting is needed for a thyroid test. If you take biotin supplements, it is worth pausing them for a couple of days beforehand as they can affect some thyroid results. If you take thyroid medication, mention it when you book. We will confirm anything specific to you.

How quickly will I get my results?

This panel usually has a fast turnaround. Your report lists every marker with its reference range and flags anything out of range. Ask us when you book and we will give you a clearer idea.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Can a doctor talk me through my results?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Want a doctor to explain the results?

Thyroid results are best understood alongside your symptoms and history. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your results mean and any next steps.

Important: Thyroid results are most useful when reviewed by a doctor who knows your history, symptoms and any medication you take. This test is a starting point, not a diagnosis. We recommend discussing your results with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before acting on any findings or changing medication.
