Why book this test

Stop guessing what your gut is telling you

Bloating, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea and cramping are common, but they are easy to shrug off and hard to explain. This panel looks at the measurable causes, from coeliac disease and the H. pylori bacterium to low iron and poor nutrient absorption, so you can act on facts rather than trial and error.

Answers for real symptoms

Coeliac antibodies and H. pylori are checked directly, alongside the nutrition and blood markers that gut problems often knock out of balance.

A report you can read

Your results come with reference ranges and plain-English notes, with anything out of range flagged so it is easy to spot.

Who it is for

Worth checking if you recognise these

This test is a sensible first step if gut symptoms keep coming back and you want to know why.

Bloating or a swollen, uncomfortable tummy
Recurring heartburn or acid reflux
Constipation, diarrhoea or unpredictable bowels
Tiredness that may point to poor absorption
Wondering if gluten or coeliac could be involved
Wanting a nutrition baseline before making changes

New, persistent or severe gut symptoms should always be reviewed by a doctor. This test helps find a cause; it does not replace medical assessment.

Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

FAQ

Common questions about the gut and nutrition test

How much is the Nutritional & Digestive Health blood test?

£237 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, all the panels listed above, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

What does this test check for?

It screens for coeliac disease (tissue transglutaminase antibodies) and the H. pylori bacterium, and checks nutritional health, iron status, a full blood count, heart markers and diabetes markers, so you see how digestion and nutrition are working together.

Does it test for coeliac disease and H. pylori?

Yes. The digestive panel includes an anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody test used to screen for coeliac disease, and an H. pylori test. For coeliac results to be reliable you should still be eating gluten in the run-up to the test, so do not cut it out beforehand.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

Do I need to fast before the test?

For the most accurate glucose, cholesterol and diabetes results we usually recommend fasting for around 10 to 12 hours, with water allowed. We will confirm exactly what to do when you book.

How quickly will I get my results?

It depends on which markers are in your test. As a rough guide, results take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Ask us when you book and we will give you a clearer idea for your test. Your report lists reference ranges with any out-of-range values flagged.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Can a doctor talk me through my results?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Want a doctor to explain the results?

You do not have to make sense of the numbers on your own. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your results mean and any next steps.

Important: Blood test results are most useful when reviewed by a doctor who knows your history. We recommend discussing your results with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before acting on any findings. Gut symptoms can have many causes, and this test does not replace a medical assessment. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice.
