- Hormone blood tests arranged in-house if needed

Fertility Scanning
Detailed pelvic ultrasound focused on ovarian reserve, follicle count and uterine assessment — useful if you're trying to conceive, considering IVF, or simply want a fertility baseline. We often combine this with hormone bloods and a GP consultation.

- Pairs well with AMH blood test for fertility baseline

Bone Density Scan (REMS)
Bone health matters more after menopause — oestrogen decline accelerates bone loss and raises osteoporosis risk. Our REMS scan is a radiation-free, ultrasound-based alternative to DEXA. Quick, accurate, no special preparation needed.
- No radiation — uses ultrasound technology
- Scans lumbar spine & femoral neck (standard sites)
- Results in 15 minutes
- Detailed fracture risk assessment
- Especially useful from age 50, after menopause, or with family history of osteoporosis

Questions women ask us
Can I see a female doctor or sonographer?
Yes — female GPs and female sonographers are available. Please request a female practitioner when you book, and we'll do our best to schedule you accordingly. For coil fittings and pelvic scans, female practitioners are usually available within the same week.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. Acorn operates on a self-referral basis. You can book any women's health service directly online or by phone — no GP letter needed.
How quickly can I be seen?
Most appointments are available within the same week. GP consultations and pelvic scans are usually within 48 hours. Coil fittings need an initial consultation first, so the fitting itself is usually 1-2 weeks after.
Can you prescribe HRT?
Yes. Our private GPs prescribe HRT where clinically appropriate, including patches, gels, tablets, and combined preparations. The prescription is issued as a private prescription which you take to any pharmacy. The medication cost is separate from our consultation fee.
What's the difference between external and internal pelvic ultrasound?
External (transabdominal) is done over the lower belly with a full bladder — gives a general overview of the womb and ovaries. Internal (transvaginal) uses a smaller probe gently inserted into the vagina — gives a much more detailed view, particularly of the ovaries and womb lining. We usually do both together for best results, but external-only is fine if you'd prefer.
Do you fit Mirena coils and copper coils?
Yes — we fit Mirena (hormonal IUS), copper coils, and Nexplanon implants. All fittings are done by a GP trained in coil/implant fitting. An initial consultation is required first to check suitability, discuss options, and make sure you're comfortable.
Is the coil device cost included?
Yes. Our coil fitting prices are all-inclusive — you pay one price for the device, the fitting procedure, and the follow-up advice. No surprise extras.
I think my coil has moved — what should I do?
Book a Lost Coil Location ultrasound (£260). Our radiologists will perform a pelvic scan to confirm the coil's position. If it's correctly placed, you'll have peace of mind. If it has moved, expelled, or perforated, we can arrange removal or replacement in-house. Until you know, use additional contraception.
Why a REMS bone scan, not DEXA?
REMS uses ultrasound to assess bone density instead of X-rays — so there's no radiation exposure. Results are equivalent to standard DEXA for spine and hip measurements. It's also faster (15 minutes) and doesn't need any special preparation. We chose REMS specifically because it makes regular bone monitoring much easier for women in their menopause years.
What if I'm not sure which test or scan I need?
Book a Private GP consultation first (£105). One of our doctors will talk through your symptoms or concerns and recommend the right next step — whether that's a scan, blood test, specialist referral, or just reassurance. We won't push tests you don't need.
Do you accept private medical insurance?
Yes — we accept Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix and Allianz. Please bring your authorisation code and policy details to your appointment, and we'll bill your insurer directly where possible.
Are appointments confidential?
Yes. All consultations and procedures are confidential, in keeping with GMC and HIW regulations. Your records are held securely and not shared with your NHS GP unless you specifically ask us to send a report.
