The South Wales private ultrasound landscape

Choosing well, in a crowded market.

In the last few years, private ultrasound and injection clinics have proliferated across Cardiff, Newport and South Wales. Many are very new. Some are run by single sonographers without consultant oversight. Others are franchised templates without local clinical accountability. They look similar on the surface — ultrasound machines, online booking pages, polished websites.

Patients can't always see the difference until something goes wrong: an inconclusive scan, a report that no consultant has reviewed, an injection without ultrasound guidance, a complication with no clear follow-up pathway. That's the moment when years of experience, consultant-led oversight, and clinical infrastructure stop being abstract qualities and start mattering very much.

Acorn is different. Here are eight specific reasons patients choose us.

Reason 1 of 8

Wales's first — and longest-established.

Established 2019, before the boom

Acorn was founded in 2019 as the first dedicated private ultrasound and injection clinic in Wales. At the time, almost all private MSK ultrasound and injection work was done at London teaching hospitals or by visiting consultants. We built a permanent base in Penarth so patients across South Wales, the Valleys, Newport, Bridgend, Swansea and across the Severn could access consultant-led imaging and treatment locally.

Since then, a wave of newer ultrasound clinics has appeared across Cardiff and South Wales. We welcome the competition — it's good for patients to have choice. But "newly opened" and "trusted track record" are not the same thing. Six years of operation means six years of refining how we deliver care, train staff, handle complications, and learn from outcomes. That experience is invisible from a website, but obvious when you walk through our door.

Reason 2 of 8

Reviews that speak for themselves.

When you're comparing private clinics, the most honest signal is verified patient feedback — not marketing claims, not paid testimonials.

★★★★★
4.9

More five-star Google reviews than any newer private ultrasound clinic in Cardiff and South Wales. Many of these reviews mention specific clinicians by name, the same-visit report process, or the way a difficult diagnosis was explained.

Click through to read them yourself. We never edit, ask for, or pay for reviews.

Volume of reviews

450+ Google reviews represents many years of consistent care across thousands of appointments. New clinics may show "100% 5-star" because they only have 20 reviews. Volume matters: it's much harder to maintain 4.9 across 450 reviews than across 20.

Independent platform

All reviews are on Google's public platform — we cannot edit, hide, or curate them. What you see is what every patient sees. Compare this to clinics that display only hand-picked testimonials.

Reason 3 of 8

Care led by consultants, not technicians.

Many private ultrasound clinics are sonographer-only operations. At Acorn, your scan or procedure is performed or directly overseen by a consultant radiologist.

Consultant radiologists

Dr Syed Junaid (Medical Director) and Dr Huw Edwards are NHS consultant radiologists with specialist MSK expertise. They personally perform scans and ultrasound-guided injections — not delegated, not supervised remotely. Meet our consultants.

Same-visit reports

Your scan is interpreted at the time, in the room, by the consultant who performed it. You leave with answers, not a "report to follow in 7 days". This is only possible because the imaging and the diagnosis happen in one pair of hands.

Treat-on-the-same-day

Because the consultant is in the room, if your scan shows something treatable with an ultrasound-guided injection, we can often do that same visit. No second appointment, no separate referral, no waiting.

Referral pathway

When something needs surgical or specialist follow-up, we have a network of consultant surgeons working alongside us (knee, foot/ankle, hand, gynaecology, sports medicine) who patients can be referred to directly. Newer clinics typically refer back to the NHS.

Reason 4 of 8

Recognised experts and clinical leaders.

Our consultants aren't just practising clinicians — they teach, publish, and represent the specialty.

BBC media contributor

Acorn has been featured on the BBC for our work in private musculoskeletal imaging and injection therapy. Our consultants are called upon as expert voices on health stories relating to musculoskeletal pain, joint health and diagnostic ultrasound.

NHS consultants

Our radiologists work as NHS consultants alongside their private work at Acorn. This dual practice keeps them at the front line of complex cases and current best practice — they aren't doing private work only.

Teaching and CPD

We host continuing professional development (CPD) events for local clinicians, physiotherapists and GPs. Recognised as the regional centre for MSK ultrasound education. See our CPD events.

Surgical referral network

Our consultant surgeons include leaders in their fields — Mr Amit Chandratreya (knee surgery), Mr Angus Maclean (hand surgery), Mr Luke Hughes (foot and ankle), and others. The full team is here.

Reason 5 of 8

Volume that builds judgement.

In medicine, experience is measured in cases seen. Acorn has cared for over 7,000 patients since 2019. That volume builds something a new clinic can't buy: clinical pattern recognition.

Pattern recognition

Thousands of shoulder scans, thousands of knee injections, thousands of blood-test interpretations. When something unusual appears on a scan, an experienced eye spots it. When a routine injection has an atypical response, experience knows what to do next.

Refined process

Things we've learned over 7,000+ appointments: how to take a focused history quickly, what aftercare information patients actually need, when to call patients back, how to handle unexpected findings sensitively. Newer clinics are still figuring this out.

Niche expertise

High-volume centres develop expertise newer clinics simply don't see. Arthrosamid, hydrodilatation, PRP, complex regional pain blocks — these are everyday at Acorn. Elsewhere they are rare or unavailable.

Audit and feedback

We audit outcomes — injection success rates, scan accuracy, patient feedback — and refine practice accordingly. Continuous improvement, not just maintained quality.

Reason 6 of 8

Award-winning service.

Vale of Glamorgan Business of the Year

Professional Services category

Independent recognition of our service quality, patient outcomes and contribution to the local healthcare ecosystem. Awarded by the Vale of Glamorgan Business Awards — an independent panel evaluating businesses across the region.

Awards from third-party panels matter more than self-published claims. We've also been featured on the BBC and are regulated by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), the independent regulator for healthcare in Wales.

Reason 7 of 8

Honest, transparent pricing.

Every price on our website is the price you pay. Every fee includes the consultation, the procedure, aftercare guidance, and the written report. Competitive with newer Cardiff and South Wales clinics — often better value when you compare what's included.

All-inclusive prices

Our prices include the scan or procedure, the consultant's time, the room, sterile equipment, the report and aftercare. Some newer clinics quote a low headline price then add fees for the report, consultation or follow-up. See our full price list.

Insurance accepted

We accept Bupa, AXA Health, WPA, Vitality and other major insurers. Self-pay rates are transparent and identical regardless of how you found us. Insurance information.

No upsells

We won't suggest you need a procedure you don't need. When a scan or injection isn't appropriate, we'll tell you — and discuss alternatives, including conservative options, even when those would mean you spend less with us.

Free Discovery Calls

For higher-cost procedures (Arthrosamid, PRP), we offer a free no-obligation phone call before booking a paid consultation. Useful for talking through suitability. No pressure, no commitment.

Reason 8 of 8

Personalised care, every visit.

High-volume doesn't mean conveyor-belt. Each appointment is unhurried, focused on you, and led by a consultant who takes the time to understand your problem.

Unhurried appointments

Most appointments are 20 to 30 minutes. We don't book back-to-back-to-back to maximise revenue. You get the time you need to ask questions, understand findings, and discuss next steps.

Explained, not just performed

Our consultants show you what they're seeing on the screen, explain it in plain English, and answer your questions. You leave understanding what's going on, not just with a piece of paper.

Coordinated care

If you need a follow-up scan, an injection, a blood test or a specialist referral, we coordinate it. Many patients have all of this with us under one roof, with continuity of care.

Two convenient clinics

Our flagship is in Penarth (10 minutes from Cardiff). We also operate a satellite clinic in Cowbridge for patients in the western Vale. Both clinics, same standards. Penarth · Cowbridge.
