Why book this test

The common triggers, quickly checked

Most everyday allergy symptoms come back to a small number of usual suspects. This first-line panel measures specific IgE against the nine allergens that account for roughly 80% of common sensitisation — the pets, dust mite, pollens and top food allergens seen most often in primary care — so you can either confirm what you already suspect or rule it out and take the next step.

Focused, not exhaustive

Ideal when symptoms point to a likely everyday trigger. A sensible first step before considering a broader panel.

A report you can read

Your results come with reference ranges and plain-English notes, with anything out of range flagged so it is easy to spot.

A doctor if you want one

Prefer to talk it through? Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Who it is for

Worth checking if you recognise these

The first-line panel is a good match when your symptoms fit one of the usual, everyday triggers.

Seasonal hay fever, itchy eyes or a runny nose
Itchy skin or eczema flare-ups you cannot explain
Reactions after common foods like milk, egg or peanut
Symptoms that flare around cats, dogs or dusty spaces
Wanting to confirm or rule out a suspected trigger
A first look before considering a broader panel

If you have ever had a severe reaction such as swelling or difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical care. A blood test is not for diagnosing anaphylaxis.

Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

FAQ

Common questions about the first-line allergy test

How much is the First-Line Allergy Panel?

£154 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, specific IgE testing for all nine allergens listed above, Total IgE, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

Which allergens does it test for?

Nine in total, grouped into four areas: animals (cat epithelium and dander, dog epithelium, European house dust mite), foods (egg white, milk, peanut), pollen and grass (silver birch, timothy grass), and Total IgE. You can see the full list in the panel above.

How is this different from the Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel?

This is our focused, first-line screen for the leading everyday triggers — the pets, dust mite, pollens and top food allergens that cover most cases. Our Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel tests more than 60 allergens across a much wider range and is a better fit for complex or unusual cases, or when a first-line test has not pinned things down.

How is this different from a skin prick test?

This is a blood test that measures specific IgE antibodies, so it can be done without stopping antihistamines and without exposing your skin to allergens. It is useful when skin testing is not suitable or when you want a straightforward first-line check of the common triggers.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

Do I need to prepare or fast?

No fasting is needed for an allergy IgE test, and you do not need to stop antihistamines. We will confirm anything specific to your appointment when you book.

How quickly will I get my results?

Usually within about six days. Your report lists every allergen measured with its specific IgE result and reference range, and flags anything outside the normal range. We will confirm timing when you book.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

What if this panel is negative but my symptoms continue?

A negative first-line result means the nine most common triggers are unlikely to be the cause, which is useful information. If symptoms persist, the next step is usually a broader panel like our Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel, or a review with a doctor to plan further investigation.

Can a doctor talk me through my results?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Want a doctor to explain the results?

Allergy results are most useful alongside your symptoms and history. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your results mean and any next steps.

Important: Allergy results are most useful when read alongside your symptoms by a doctor who knows your history. A positive IgE result shows sensitisation and does not always mean a clinical allergy, and a first-line panel this size will not rule out every allergy. We recommend discussing your results with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before acting on any findings. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction, seek urgent medical care. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice.
