The first-line panel picks up the everyday triggers, but not every allergy comes from the usual nine. Which allergens does it test for?
Eighteen in total, grouped into four areas: animals (American and European house dust mites, cat epithelium and dander, dog dander, dog epithelium), foods (cod, egg yolk, egg white, hazelnut, milk, peanut, sesame seed, shrimp, soyabean), pollen and grass (mugwort, silver birch, timothy grass), and Total IgE. You can see the full list in the panel above.
How is this different from the First-Line Allergy Panel?
The First-Line Allergy Panel covers nine of the most common triggers for £154 and is the right starting point when symptoms point to an obvious everyday cause. The Enhanced panel adds nine more allergens on top — tree nut (hazelnut), seafood (cod, shrimp), soy, sesame, weed pollen (mugwort), egg yolk and an additional dust mite species — taking coverage to roughly 90% of the IgE allergies seen in UK primary care.
How is this different from the Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel?
Our Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel tests more than 60 allergens across a much wider range, including moulds and yeasts, additional tree pollens and grasses, and a longer list of foods. It is a better fit for complex or unusual cases, or when a broader profile has still not identified a trigger.
How is this different from a skin prick test?
This is a blood test that measures specific IgE antibodies, so it can be done without stopping antihistamines and without exposing your skin to allergens. It is useful when skin testing is not suitable or when you want to widen the search beyond the everyday triggers.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.
Do I need to prepare or fast?
No fasting is needed for an allergy IgE test, and you do not need to stop antihistamines. We will confirm anything specific to your appointment when you book.
How quickly will I get my results?
Usually within about six days. Your report lists every allergen measured with its specific IgE result and reference range, and flags anything outside the normal range. We will confirm timing when you book.
Where is the blood taken?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.
I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
What if this panel is negative but my symptoms continue?
A negative result across 18 allergens is useful information: it makes an IgE-mediated allergy to the leading UK primary-care triggers less likely. If symptoms still continue, the next step is usually our Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel (more than 60 allergens across a wider range including moulds and yeasts), or a review with a doctor to plan further investigation.
