What an ultrasound can identify

Most lumps are benign (lipoma, cyst, lymph node) but ultrasound rapidly distinguishes worrying features from reassuring ones.

Lipoma

Most common — benign fatty lump, typical ultrasound appearance.

Sebaceous cyst

Skin-tethered cyst with classic appearance.

Lymph nodes

Reactive (infection) vs suspicious (cancer features).

Ganglion cyst

Common around wrist, hand, foot — fluid-filled.

Soft tissue tumour

Sarcomas have suspicious ultrasound features.

Vascular lesions

Haemangiomas, vascular malformations.

If anything looks suspicious, your consultant arranges urgent referral for biopsy or specialist opinion. Note: this scan does not cover breast lumps — please contact a specialist breast clinic.

Before your scan

Preparation

No preparation needed

How to prepare

Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to the lump area.

Don't apply creams to the area on the day of the scan.

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about worry lump ultrasound

How much does a private lump ultrasound cost?

£260 all-inclusive at Acorn Private Clinic. Includes consultation, ultrasound, immediate verbal results, written report within 24-48 hours.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — self-refer. Book online in 60 seconds.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most appointments within 48-72 hours. Urgent slots sometimes available same-day.

Can ultrasound tell if a lump is cancerous?

Ultrasound identifies many features that suggest cancer (irregular outline, abnormal vessels, fixed lump). However, a biopsy is needed to confirm. The scan helps decide whether a biopsy is needed.

We do not scan breast lumps at Acorn Private Clinic — breast imaging requires a dedicated breast clinic. Please contact a specialist breast service.

What if my lump is suspicious?

Your consultant will explain the findings and arrange urgent onward referral on the same day for biopsy or specialist opinion.

How long does the scan take?

About 20-30 minutes.

Do I need to prepare?

No special preparation. Just turn up wearing clothing that allows access to the lump.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes — no radiation, safe for all ages.

Will I get a written report?

Yes — immediate verbal results, then a written consultant report within 24-48 hours.

Can I claim on health insurance?

Most UK insurers cover diagnostic lump ultrasound when clinically indicated.
