Reasons to book a lump scan
What an ultrasound can identify
Most lumps turn out to be benign, such as a lipoma, a cyst or a reactive lymph node. Ultrasound helps separate the reassuring features from the ones that need further investigation.
Lipoma
The most common finding. A benign fatty lump with a typical ultrasound appearance. If you want it taken out, see our lump & bump removal service.
Sebaceous cyst
A skin-tethered cyst with a classic appearance, and one we can remove under local anaesthetic if it keeps flaring.
Lymph nodes
Reactive nodes from infection, versus nodes with features that need investigating. Common in the neck and the armpit.
Ganglion cyst
A fluid-filled lump, common around the wrist, hand and foot.
Soft tissue tumour
Sarcomas have distinct ultrasound features, and finding them early matters.
If anything looks suspicious, your consultant arranges urgent referral for biopsy or a specialist opinion the same day. This scan does not cover breast lumps. Breast imaging needs a dedicated breast clinic, so please contact a specialist breast service instead.
Preparation
How to prepare
No special preparation. Just arrive ready to show us the lump. If you can still feel it but it is hard to point to, mark the spot with a pen before you come.
If the lump is in an intimate area, a chaperone of the same sex is always available.

The scan (20-30 mins)
You show the consultant where the lump is. Warm gel goes on the skin and the probe passes over it, with gentle pressure to see how it compresses and moves and how it sits against nearby structures.
Immediate results
Your consultant explains the findings as they scan and again at the end, so you leave knowing what's going on. Written report follows within 24-48 hours.

Common questions about lump & bump ultrasound
How much does a private lump ultrasound cost?
£260 all-inclusive at Acorn Private Clinic. That covers the consultation, the ultrasound, immediate verbal results and a written report within 24-48 hours. Two areas in one appointment is £360, and three areas is £399.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can self-refer. Book online in 60 seconds.
How quickly can I be seen?

Can ultrasound tell if a lump is cancerous?
Ultrasound identifies many features that suggest cancer, such as an irregular outline or a lump fixed to the tissue beneath it. It cannot confirm a diagnosis on its own: that needs a biopsy. What the scan does is establish whether a biopsy is warranted, and how urgently.
What about breast lumps?
We do not scan breast lumps at Acorn Private Clinic. Breast imaging needs a dedicated breast clinic with mammography and triple assessment, so please contact a specialist breast service instead.
What if my lump is suspicious?
Your consultant explains the findings there and then, and arranges urgent onward referral the same day for biopsy or a specialist opinion.
Can you remove the lump as well?
Often yes, for benign lumps such as lipomas and sebaceous cysts. Removal is a separate appointment and a separate price, and every patient has a pre-operative consultation first. See our lump & bump removal service.
Do I need to prepare?
No special preparation. Just turn up wearing clothing that allows access to the lump, and avoid putting creams on the area that day.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, and is safe at all ages.
Will I get a written report?
Yes. Immediate verbal results at the appointment, then a written consultant report within 24-48 hours.
Can I claim on health insurance?
Most UK insurers cover diagnostic lump ultrasound where there is a clinical indication. Check with your insurer for an authorisation code and bring it with you.
