Is it mould you are reacting to? Near Cardiff
One blood test for the seven moulds and yeasts behind most fungal allergy. Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium, plus baker's yeast, brewer's yeast and Candida — measured for specific IgE alongside Total IgE. A sensible check when symptoms are year-round, worse in damp or autumn weather, or linked to a damp home or workplace. Self-refer at our Penarth or Cowbridge clinics near Cardiff.

The trigger that hides in plain sight
Mould allergy is easy to miss because the exposure is invisible and often indoors. Symptoms that will not shift, or that get worse in a damp room, in autumn, or in an older or water-damaged building, can point to a fungal trigger rather than pollen or pets. This panel measures specific IgE against the moulds and yeasts most likely to be responsible, so you can stop guessing.
Indoor and outdoor moulds
Covers the outdoor moulds that peak in damp and autumn weather and the indoor ones that build up in damp homes, plus common yeasts.
A report you can read
Your results come with reference ranges and plain-English notes, with anything out of range flagged so it is easy to spot.

Worth checking if you recognise these
The mould panel is the right fit when symptoms fit a fungal pattern — indoors, damp conditions, or all year round.
This is an allergy (IgE) test, not a test for fungal infection or "mould toxicity". If you are worried about an active infection or a water-damaged building making you unwell, please see a doctor.
Seven moulds and yeasts, plus Total IgE

Difficult veins? We find them with ultrasound
If you have fragile or hard-to-find veins and have had failed attempts before, our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound. It is the only such service in South Wales, and patients travel to us from across Wales and the West for it.
Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

Common questions about the mould allergy test
How much is the Mould & Fungal Allergy Panel?
£147 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, specific IgE testing for all 7 moulds and yeasts listed above, Total IgE, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.
Which moulds and yeasts does it test for?
Seven in total, in two groups: four environmental moulds (Alternaria tenuis, Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium herbarum, Penicillium notatum) and three yeasts and fungi (baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, Candida albicans). Total IgE is also measured. You can see the full list in the panel above.
Does this test for a mould infection or "mould toxicity"?
No. This is an allergy test: it measures IgE antibodies, which show whether your immune system reacts to these moulds as allergens. It does not test for an active fungal infection (such as invasive aspergillosis or thrush), and it is not a mycotoxin or "mould illness" test. Those are different investigations. If you are worried about an infection or the effects of a water-damaged building, please see a doctor.
I have asthma. Is Aspergillus sensitivity important?
It can be. Sensitisation to Aspergillus fumigatus is relevant in some people with asthma and is one of the things a doctor considers when asthma is harder to control than expected, including a condition called allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). A positive result here does not diagnose ABPA on its own, but it is a useful flag worth discussing with your GP or a respiratory specialist.
Is the Candida result a test for candida overgrowth or "the candida diet"?
No. The Candida albicans result measures IgE sensitisation to candida as an allergen. It is not a test for gut candida overgrowth and does not support or rule out claims made for anti-candida diets, which are a separate and much-debated area. Read the candida result as one allergen among the seven, and discuss anything unexpected with a doctor.
How is this different from your other allergy panels?
Mould is not covered by our First-Line or Enhanced panels, so this is the focused option if fungal allergy is your main concern. Our Comprehensive Allergy IgE panel covers the same seven moulds and yeasts plus pets, dust mite, pollens and foods, and is the better choice if you are not sure whether mould, or something else, is the trigger.
How is this different from a skin prick test?
This is a blood test that measures specific IgE antibodies, so it can be done without stopping antihistamines and without exposing your skin to allergens. It is useful when skin testing is not suitable, when you are on treatment that would interfere with a skin test, or when you want a broad fungal picture in one appointment.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.
Do I need to prepare or fast?
No fasting is needed for an allergy IgE test, and you do not need to stop antihistamines. We will confirm anything specific to your appointment when you book.
How quickly will I get my results?
Usually within about six days. Your report lists every mould and yeast measured with its specific IgE result and reference range, and flags anything outside the normal range. We will confirm timing when you book.
Where is the blood taken?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.
I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
What if this panel is negative but my symptoms continue?
A negative mould result makes fungal allergy less likely and points to other triggers — dust mite, pets, pollens or foods. In that case, our Enhanced or Comprehensive panels, or a review with a doctor, would be the sensible next step.
Can a doctor talk me through my results?
Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.
Want a doctor to explain the results?
Mould allergy results are most useful alongside your symptoms, your home and work environment, and any asthma you have. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your results mean and any next steps.

Important: This is an allergy (IgE) test and is most useful when read alongside your symptoms and environment by a doctor who knows your history. It does not test for fungal infection, mycotoxins or "mould toxicity", and a positive IgE result shows sensitisation rather than confirming a clinical allergy. A negative result across these seven moulds and yeasts does not rule out every possible airborne allergy. Sensitisation to Aspergillus in the context of asthma may need specialist review. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction, or you are worried an infection or damp building is making you unwell, seek medical care. We recommend discussing your results with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before acting on any findings. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice.
