What will the test tell me?

Do I need to fast or prepare?
No. A blood group test needs no fasting or special preparation. You can eat and drink normally beforehand, and keep taking any regular medication as usual.
Can I use this result for a blood transfusion?
No, and this is important. A hospital always re-tests and cross-matches your blood immediately before any transfusion, as a safety step, and will not rely on a result or card from elsewhere. This test is for your information and records, not a substitute for the checks done in hospital.
Why might I want to know my blood type?
Common reasons include planning a pregnancy (your Rh status can be relevant), thinking about donating blood, having it on your personal records, peace of mind before travelling, or simple curiosity. There is no wrong reason to want to know.
Is the blood type diet worth following?
We would be honest here: the idea that you should eat according to your blood type is not supported by good scientific evidence. Knowing your blood type is genuinely useful for the reasons above, but we would not suggest booking this test as the basis for a blood type diet.
I am pregnant. Do I need this test?
Usually not for that reason alone. In the UK, your blood group and Rh status are checked as part of routine NHS antenatal care, so you may already be having it done. If you would still like to know sooner or keep your own record, you are welcome to book.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
