Early pregnancy blood test (beta hCG)

Early pregnancy answers, near Cardiff

A blood test that measures beta hCG, the pregnancy hormone, with a quantitative reading. Detects pregnancy earlier than a urine test — from around 8 to 11 days after conception — and gives you a precise number rather than a yes or no. Also used for monitoring after IVF, following up on a miscarriage, and by clinicians as a tumour marker. Self-refer at our Penarth or Cowbridge clinics near Cardiff.

Why book this test

An earlier, clearer answer

Beta hCG is the hormone your body starts to produce shortly after conception. A blood test picks it up sooner than a home urine test and gives you a specific number, which is why doctors use it for early confirmation, monitoring after IVF or miscarriage, and as a tumour marker for certain conditions.

Detect earlier

Picks up beta hCG from around 8 to 11 days after conception, before a home urine test would turn positive.

A precise number

Your report gives your exact beta hCG level, not just a positive or negative. Useful for tracking or sharing with a clinician.

A doctor if you want one

Prefer to talk it through? Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your result and next steps.

Who it is for

You might consider this if

A quantitative beta hCG test can be a helpful step in a few different situations.

You want early confirmation of pregnancy before a home test would show it
You have had a positive home test and want a quantitative reading
You are being monitored after IVF or fertility treatment
You need follow-up after a miscarriage to confirm levels are falling
You have had ectopic pregnancy before and want an early check
A clinician has asked for a quantitative beta hCG

Important safety note: if you have vaginal bleeding, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or feel faint, please seek urgent medical review — call 999, go to your nearest A&E, or call NHS 111 — rather than booking a blood test. These can be signs of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage that need immediate clinical assessment.

What is measured

A single, focused marker

This is a dedicated quantitative beta hCG test. It measures one thing well, and reports it as a precise number with reference values.

Pregnancy hormone (quantitative) 1
Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG)

Your report gives your beta hCG result as a precise number, with the reference values used by the laboratory.

Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

FAQ

Common questions about the beta hCG blood test

How much is the beta hCG blood test?

£100 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, the quantitative beta hCG measurement, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

What does beta hCG tell me?

Beta hCG is the hormone your body produces shortly after conception. A quantitative test gives you a precise number, which can confirm pregnancy earlier than a home urine test. The result on its own does not tell you whether the pregnancy is developing normally or where it is located — for that, doctors usually use a repeat test 48 hours later or an early ultrasound scan.

How early can this test detect pregnancy?

Beta hCG can typically be picked up in blood from around 8 to 11 days after conception, which is often several days earlier than a home urine test. If you test too early you may get a low or negative result and a repeat may be needed. If you are unsure of your dates, mention it when you book and we can advise.

Can this test confirm my pregnancy is healthy?

Not on its own. A single beta hCG level confirms that a pregnancy exists, but it does not confirm the pregnancy is developing normally (viability) or that it is in the right place (in the uterus rather than ectopic). Doctors usually assess this with two beta hCG readings taken 48 hours apart to see how the level is changing, or with an early ultrasound scan.

I am worried about ectopic pregnancy — should I book this test?

If you have any red-flag symptoms — vaginal bleeding, one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or feeling faint — please seek urgent medical review right away. Call 999, attend your nearest A&E, or call NHS 111. A blood test alone is not the right response to those symptoms. If you have no urgent symptoms but a history of ectopic pregnancy and want an early check, a quantitative beta hCG is a reasonable first step, and a follow-up scan or repeat test will usually be needed alongside it.

Is beta hCG only used for pregnancy?

Mostly, but not only. Beta hCG is also used by clinicians as a tumour marker for certain conditions, including some germ cell tumours and gestational trophoblastic disease, and for monitoring after such treatment. If a clinician has asked you to have this test for a non-pregnancy reason, this is the same laboratory test and the result is reported in the same way.

Do I need to fast or time the test?

No fasting is required and there is no cycle timing to worry about. For the earliest detection of pregnancy, the test is most reliable from around 8 to 11 days after conception. We will confirm anything specific to your appointment when you book.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

How quickly will I get my result?

Your report is emailed to you once the laboratory has processed the sample. Given the anxious context of this test, ask us when you book and we will give you a clear idea of timing.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Can a doctor talk me through my result?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your result and next steps, including whether a repeat test or scan would be helpful.

Want a doctor to explain the result?

A beta hCG number is most useful alongside your dates, history and any next steps such as a repeat test or scan. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your result means.

Important: A positive beta hCG result confirms that a pregnancy exists but does not confirm the pregnancy is developing normally (viability) or that it is in the right place — ectopic pregnancy can present with only mildly abnormal hCG and is a medical emergency. Doctors usually assess viability with two beta hCG readings taken 48 hours apart, or with an early ultrasound scan. If you have vaginal bleeding, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or feel faint, please seek urgent medical review — call 999, attend A&E or call NHS 111 — rather than relying on a blood test. We recommend discussing your result with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before making decisions based on it. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice and this test is not a substitute for pregnancy scanning or clinical review.
