What we can identify

Pelvic ultrasound is the first-line imaging for gynaecological symptoms and fertility assessment.

Ovarian cysts

Simple, complex, dermoid, endometriotic.

Fibroids

Common cause of heavy periods, measured for follow-up.

Endometrial polyps

Cause of irregular bleeding.

Polycystic ovaries (PCOS)

Multiple small follicles, classic appearance.

Endometriosis (advanced)

Endometriomas, deep infiltration signs.

Early pregnancy

Confirms intrauterine pregnancy, viability.

For fertility patients: we can perform follicle tracking across the cycle. Multiple appointments may be needed — discuss with us.

Before your scan

Preparation

Full bladder for external scan

How to prepare

For external scan drink 1.5 pints of water in the hour before. Do not empty your bladder.
For internal scan empty your bladder just before the scan.
Eat normally no fasting required.
Bring blood test results if relevant (e.g. AMH, CA125, hormone profile).

For the external (transabdominal) scan, a full bladder pushes the bowel out of the way and gives clearer images. For the internal (transvaginal) scan, an empty bladder is better.

A female chaperone is always present for transvaginal scans. If you'd prefer external scan only, just choose that option.

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about female pelvis

How much does a private female pelvis ultrasound cost?

£260 for external only, £360 for external + internal, £399 for pelvis + abdomen full check.

Do I need an internal scan?

Not always. External (transabdominal) is sufficient for many concerns. Internal (transvaginal) gives more detail for ovaries, endometrium, early pregnancy, and small fibroids. You choose at booking.

Is the internal scan painful?

Mildly uncomfortable but not painful. Inserted gently with sterile cover and lubricant. You can stop at any point.

Can the scan diagnose endometriosis?

Mild endometriosis is often invisible on ultrasound. Advanced endometriosis (endometriomas, deep infiltration) can be seen. MRI is sometimes needed.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — self-refer.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most appointments within 48-72 hours.

Can the scan detect ovarian cancer?

Ultrasound shows suspicious features that prompt further work-up. Combined with CA125 blood test, it's an effective screening tool. Confirmation requires biopsy.

I'm trying to conceive — can you help?

Yes — we offer follicle tracking, antral follicle count, and early pregnancy scans. Discuss your needs at booking.

Can I have a scan during my period?

Yes — ultrasound can be performed during menstruation. Internal scan may be slightly less comfortable. External scan is fine.

Will the doctor be female?

We can arrange a female sonographer if requested — please specify when booking.

Will I get a written report?

Yes — immediate verbal results plus written report in 24-48 hours.
