Preparation & recovery

Before surgery: No specific preparation needed. Your consultant may ask you to pause blood-thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) for a few days. Stopping smoking before and after improves wound healing.

After surgery: Rest for the rest of the day. Most patients return to office work within 24-48 hours. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 2 weeks. Gentle activity from week 3. Full review at 4 weeks.

Your questions, answered

Minor surgery FAQs.

How much does lump removal cost?
Pre-operative consultation is £75. Skin tag removal starts from £250 (up to 4 tags) or £495 (5-10 tags). Sebaceous warts and keratoses are £250. Lipoma, sebaceous cyst, pilar cyst and benign mole removal starts from £600 (final price depends on size, location and complexity). Small hernia surgery starts from £1,500. All surgical prices are confirmed at your pre-op consultation before any surgery is performed.
Is the surgery painful?
All our minor surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. You'll feel a small sting as the anaesthetic is injected, after which the area is completely numb. You will not feel any pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort may be felt for 1-2 days afterwards, easily managed with paracetamol.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients return to office work within 24-48 hours. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for two weeks. Stitches are typically removed at 7-14 days depending on location. Your surgeon will see you at a 4-week follow-up to confirm healing.
Will there be a scar?
All surgical removal leaves some scar tissue. Our surgeons use fine sutures and place incisions along natural skin lines wherever possible to minimise visible scarring. Most scars fade significantly over 6-12 months. Your surgeon will discuss expected cosmetic outcomes at your pre-op consultation.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book a pre-operative consultation directly online or by phone. If you'd like the lump examined by a GP first, our private GP consultations are available from £95.
Will the lump be sent for analysis?
For most clearly benign lesions, histology is not required. However, if there's any clinical doubt about the nature of the lump, your surgeon may recommend sending the specimen for histology (additional laboratory fee). This will be discussed and quoted at your consultation.
Can small hernias be repaired under local anaesthetic?
Yes — small hernias can be repaired under local anaesthetic by our experienced surgeons. Suitability will be assessed at your £75 pre-op consultation. Larger or more complex hernias may require general anaesthetic, in which case we can refer onward to a hospital setting.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes — we accept Bupa, AXA Health, WPA, Vitality, Aviva, Cigna, Healix, Saga and Allianz. Contact us with your insurer details and we can advise on pre-authorisation. Self-pay rates are transparent and competitive.
Where are your clinics?
Our flagship clinic is at 13 Washington Buildings, Stanwell Road, Penarth, CF64 2AD (10 minutes from Cardiff city centre, free street parking). We also operate from Beauty Within, 10 High Street, Cowbridge, CF71 7AG.
What if my lump isn't benign?
At your pre-op consultation, your surgeon will assess whether the lump appears clinically benign. If anything is suspicious, we may recommend further investigation (such as ultrasound) before considering surgery, or refer onward to a specialist. We won't proceed with cosmetic removal of any lesion with concerning features without proper investigation.
How do I know if my lump is dangerous?
It's natural to worry, but most lumps are harmless. Signs that warrant prompt review include: rapid growth, change in colour or shape, persistent pain, bleeding or ulceration, or a hard, fixed lump that doesn't move with the skin. If you're worried, book a £75 pre-op consultation — we'll examine it properly and tell you what it is. If anything concerning is found, we'll arrange the right next step rather than proceed with surgery.
Can I just have my lump checked first, without committing to surgery?
Absolutely. The £75 pre-op consultation is a no-pressure assessment. Many patients book it just to find out what their lump is. If you decide not to proceed, that's fine — you simply pay the £75 for the consultation and you leave with a clear diagnosis. No further commitment.
Will my lump be removed on the same day as the consultation?
Usually no — the pre-op consultation is a separate appointment so you have time to consider the procedure, plan your recovery, and arrange any pre-op preparations. However, in some cases (small skin tags, very simple lesions) same-day removal may be possible at the consultant's discretion. Most patients prefer to book surgery for a separate day.

Worried it might be something serious?

Most lumps and bumps are harmless — but it's natural to worry. At your £75 pre-op consultation, your surgeon will examine the lump in person and tell you what it is. If anything looks suspicious, we won't proceed with cosmetic removal — we'll arrange the right investigation (ultrasound, biopsy or onward referral) before any decision is made.

Your safety always comes first. The £75 consultation is a no-pressure assessment — if surgery isn't right, we'll tell you.
