If you have fragile or hard-to-find veins and have had failed attempts before, our consultant radiologists can take your sample under real-time ultrasound. It is the only such service in South Wales, and patients travel to us from across Wales and the West for it.

What does the panel cover?
Six areas in one appointment: a full blood count, liver health, kidney health, heart and cholesterol markers, bone chemistry and diabetes markers. Is this an emergency or acute-care test?
No. Despite the name, this is a broad screening panel you can self-refer for, not an emergency service. If you are severely unwell, or your symptoms are sudden, severe or getting worse, please see a doctor or seek urgent care rather than waiting on a blood test. This panel is best used to build a wider picture, ideally alongside a doctor.
How is this different from the Standard Health Screen?
They overlap but are not identical. Acute Med 1 is a focused chemistry and blood-count panel across six areas. Our Standard Health Screen is broader still, adding iron status, vitamin D, a high-sensitivity inflammation marker and a full urinalysis. If you want the widest general check, the Standard Screen is the better fit; if you want a strong core chemistry panel, this one does the job.
Do I need to fast before the test?
A light fast can help, mainly for the glucose and cholesterol markers, so a morning appointment after an overnight fast with plain water is ideal. It is not essential, and we can still run the panel if you have eaten. Keep taking any regular medication as normal unless your own doctor has said otherwise, and let us know what you take.
How quickly will I get my results?
Usually the next day. Your report groups every marker by panel, each with its reference range, and flags anything outside the normal range. We will confirm timing when you book.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.
Where is the blood taken?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.
I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
