Why book this test

Put a name to what has changed

Hormones shape your cycle, your mood, your energy and your fertility, and when they shift it can be hard to know what is going on. This test measures the eight that matter most, giving you and your doctor a clear starting point rather than guesswork.

A clear hormonal picture

Eight key hormones measured together, so patterns behind your cycle, mood or fertility are easier to see.

A report you can read

Your results come with reference ranges and plain-English notes, with anything out of range flagged so it is easy to spot.

A doctor if you want one

Prefer to talk it through? Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Who it is for

Worth checking if you recognise these

This test is a sensible step if you have noticed changes that hormones can be behind.

Irregular, absent or changing periods
Low mood, anxiety or mood swings
Tiredness or low energy
Trying to conceive, or planning to
Acne, unwanted hair growth or hair thinning
Perimenopausal changes, or checking your levels

Female hormones vary across the menstrual cycle, so timing matters for some markers. See the FAQ on when to take the test, and speak to a doctor about any persistent symptoms.

Nobody had managed to take my blood in years without several attempts. Here it was done first time with the ultrasound. Such a relief.

FAQ

Common questions about the female hormone test

How much is the Female Hormones blood test?

£150 all inclusive. That covers the blood draw, all eight hormone markers, and a plain-English report emailed to you. A £50 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total.

Which hormones does it test?

Oestradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and free androgen index.

When in my cycle should I take the test?

It depends on what is being looked at. Some hormones are usually measured in the first few days of your cycle, while progesterone is typically checked about a week before your period is due. If you have periods, let us know your cycle when you book and we can advise on timing. If your cycle is irregular or absent, we can still test and interpret the results accordingly.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.

Can this test help if I am trying to conceive?

It can be a useful starting point, giving a picture of hormones involved in ovulation and fertility. It is not a full fertility assessment, so we would recommend discussing your results and any next steps with a doctor.

Do I need to fast before the test?

No fasting is needed for this panel. A morning appointment can be helpful for some hormones. We will confirm anything specific to you when you book.

How quickly will I get my results?

This panel usually has a fast turnaround. Your report lists every hormone with its reference range and flags anything out of range. Ask us when you book and we will give you a clearer idea.

Where is the blood taken?

At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.

I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?

Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Can a doctor talk me through my results?

Yes. You can book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will go through your results and next steps.

Want a doctor to explain the results?

Hormone results are best understood alongside your symptoms and cycle. Book a private GP appointment and one of our doctors will talk you through what your results mean and any next steps.

Important: Hormone levels vary across the menstrual cycle and with life stage, so results are most useful when reviewed by a doctor who knows your history and the timing of your test. This test is a starting point and not a full fertility or menopause assessment. We recommend discussing your results with your own GP, or booking a private GP appointment with us, before acting on any findings. Lab values alone do not constitute medical advice.
