What does the test measure?
Nine markers in three groups: kidney function (creatinine, eGFR and urea), electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chloride), and minerals and bone chemistry (adjusted calcium, phosphate and magnesium). Together these show how well your kidneys are filtering and whether your salts and minerals are in balance. You can see the full list in the panel above.
What is eGFR?
eGFR stands for estimated glomerular filtration rate. It is a calculation, based on your creatinine result along with factors such as age, that estimates how well your kidneys are filtering. Because it is an estimate, it is read alongside creatinine rather than on its own, and things like your muscle mass can affect it. A doctor will interpret it in context.
Do I need to fast before the test?
Fasting is not usually required for a kidney panel. It is a good idea to be well hydrated and to avoid a very high-protein meal or heavy exercise just beforehand, as these can nudge some results. We will confirm anything specific to you when you book.
Who might find this test useful?
People who want a baseline of their kidney health, those living with diabetes or high blood pressure, anyone on long-term medication that can affect the kidneys, and people with a family history of kidney disease. It is also handy for keeping an eye on a result that has been borderline before. If in doubt, a GP can advise whether it is right for you.
Is one result enough to tell me about my kidneys?
A single test is a useful snapshot, but kidney function is best understood as a trend over time, since a one-off value can be affected by hydration, diet and other short-term factors. If a result is outside the range, the usual approach is to repeat it and look at the pattern, which a doctor can help arrange.

Where is the blood taken?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.
I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
