Which markers does it test?
Total testosterone, free testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index and albumin. Together these give a fuller picture of your testosterone than a single total measurement.
What time of day should I take the test?
Testosterone is highest in the morning, so a morning appointment, ideally before 11am, gives the most reliable result. We can advise on timing when you book.
What is the difference between total and free testosterone?
Total testosterone measures all the testosterone in your blood, most of which is bound to proteins. Free testosterone is the small portion that is active and available to your body. Measuring both, along with SHBG, gives a more accurate picture than total alone.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. This is a self-refer test. Book online or call 029 2199 9300.
Do I need to fast before the test?
No fasting is needed for this panel, though a morning appointment is recommended. We will confirm anything specific to you when you book.
Can I use this to monitor treatment?
Yes. It is well suited to keeping an eye on your testosterone over time. If you are on any treatment, mention it when you book so we can advise on timing, and discuss your results with the doctor overseeing your care.
Where is the blood taken?
At our Penarth clinic (13 Washington Buildings, CF64 2AD) or our Cowbridge clinic (10 High Street, CF71 7AG). Both are a short drive from Cardiff with easy parking.
I have difficult veins. Can you still take blood?
Yes. Our consultant radiologists can take the sample under real-time ultrasound, the only such service in South Wales. Mention it when you book so we can allow time.
