The thyroid gland, in detail
A focused scan of the thyroid and the lymph nodes around it. Every nodule is measured, described and scored, so the report is one an endocrinologist or surgeon can act on.
Both thyroid lobes
Size and volume of each lobe, plus the isthmus between them.
Nodules
How many, how big, and where each one sits.
Nodule scoring
Each nodule scored so the need for biopsy is clear.
Echotexture
The background pattern of the gland, which changes in autoimmune disease.
Nodule composition
Solid, cystic or mixed — a key part of the score.
Calcification
Coarse and fine calcification, which carry different significance.
Cervical lymph nodes
The neck levels a thyroid problem would drain to.
Parathyroid glands
Looked for where hyperparathyroidism is suspected.
Reasons to book a thyroid scan
What a thyroid scan can identify
Ultrasound is the first-line imaging test for the thyroid. It shows the structure of the gland in fine detail, which blood tests cannot, and the two together answer most thyroid questions.
Thyroid nodules
Extremely common, and the great majority are benign. Each one is scored so you know which, if any, need anything further.
Multinodular goitre
An enlarged gland with multiple nodules, and any pressure on the windpipe noted.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis
The autoimmune pattern behind most underactive thyroids, which has a characteristic appearance.
de Quervain's thyroiditis
The painful, usually post-viral thyroiditis, which settles on its own but is easily mistaken for something worse.
Thyroid cysts
Simple and complex cysts, which behave very differently from solid nodules.
Parathyroid adenoma
Sought where blood tests point to hyperparathyroidism.
Ultrasound shows the structure of the gland, not how it is working, so it does not replace a blood test. If you have not had thyroid function checked recently, our blood test service can run TSH and T4 alongside the scan and the two get read together. If a nodule needs sampling, we arrange a fine-needle aspiration biopsy with a specialist. If your concern is a lump elsewhere in the neck rather than the thyroid itself, our neck scan is the one you want.
Preparation
How to prepare for your thyroid ultrasound
No special prep. We position you with the neck gently extended, which brings the thyroid forward and gives the clearest images.
If you have neck stiffness or arthritis, let us know and we'll work in a position that's comfortable for you.
Your appointment, step by step
Arrive
Free parking at Penarth. 5-minute walk from Penarth railway station.
Meet your consultant
A look at your blood results and history, and what prompted the scan. Ask any questions.
The scan (20-30 mins)
You lie on your back with a pillow under your shoulders so the neck is gently extended, and warm gel goes on the front of the neck. You may be asked to swallow, which moves the thyroid and helps separate it from the structures around it.
Immediate results
Your consultant explains what each nodule scored and what that means, so you leave knowing whether anything further is needed. Written report follows within 24-48 hours.
Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.
Transparent, all-inclusive
One simple price for the thyroid scan. Combine with a second area in the same appointment for £360, or three areas for £399.

Common questions about thyroid ultrasound
How much does a private thyroid ultrasound cost?
£260 all-inclusive. That covers the consultation, the scan, immediate verbal results and a written report within 24-48 hours. Adding a second area in the same appointment is £360, and three areas is £399.
Should I book the thyroid scan or the neck scan?
Book thyroid if your concern is the gland itself: a swelling at the front of the neck, a nodule, an abnormal blood test, or monitoring something already known about. Book our neck scan if it is a lump elsewhere in the neck, swollen glands or a salivary gland problem. Both are £260, and if you pick the wrong one the consultant simply scans what is relevant on the day.
Can ultrasound check my thyroid function?
No. Function, meaning whether the gland is underactive or overactive, is measured by blood tests (TSH and T4). Ultrasound shows the structure: size, nodules, texture and composition. They answer different questions and are usually read together, which is why we can arrange thyroid blood tests alongside the scan.
How are thyroid nodules scored?
Every nodule is graded on a standardised ultrasound scale, looking at whether it is solid or cystic, its outline, its shape, its echogenicity and any calcification. That score, combined with the size of the nodule, is what determines whether a fine-needle aspiration biopsy is recommended. A small nodule with a low score is usually just watched; a higher score, or a large nodule, moves the threshold for sampling.
Does a nodule mean I have thyroid cancer?
Almost certainly not. Thyroid nodules are very common, particularly in women and with increasing age, and the great majority are benign. Ultrasound identifies the features that raise or lower suspicion, which is what the scoring is for. A definitive answer needs a biopsy, and most people never need one.
My TSH is abnormal, do I need a scan?
If your TSH is abnormal and you can also feel a swelling or a nodule, then yes. If the blood test is the only abnormality, a scan can still help by showing thyroiditis or other structural change, though treatment decisions in that situation are usually led by the bloods themselves rather than the images.
What does Hashimoto's look like on ultrasound?
Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the autoimmune condition behind most underactive thyroids, gives the gland a characteristic coarse, patchy appearance, sometimes with small nodules. Ultrasound supports the diagnosis but does not make it on its own: antibody blood tests do that.
I have a known nodule. How often should it be rescanned?
That depends on its score and size, and on whether it has changed. Your consultant will tell you what interval is appropriate in your case and why, following national guidance. If you bring your previous scan report, we can compare directly, which is the whole point of surveillance and is often the most useful thing you can do.
Will I need a biopsy, and can you do it?
Most people do not need one. Where a fine-needle aspiration is recommended, we arrange it with a specialist rather than performing it here, and your report sets out exactly which nodule and why so nothing is repeated unnecessarily.
How long does the scan take?
About 20-30 minutes, including time to talk through the findings.
Is ultrasound safe, including in pregnancy?
Yes. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, so it is safe in pregnancy and can be repeated as often as needed. Thyroid problems are relatively common in pregnancy and around childbirth, and ultrasound is the right first imaging test in that situation.
Will I get a written report?
Yes. Immediate verbal results at the appointment, plus a written consultant report within 24-48 hours, with each nodule measured, described and scored. With your permission we can send it to your GP or endocrinologist.
