Coils & the implant
Fit-and-forget contraception, fitted here at Penarth with the device cost included.
Mirena (hormonal IUS)
Releases the hormone levonorgestrel locally. Lasts up to 8 years and often makes periods much lighter.
Copper coil (IUD)
Completely hormone-free and effective for up to 10 years. A great option if you'd rather avoid hormones.
Nexplanon implant
A small, flexible rod placed in the upper arm under local anaesthetic. Lasts up to 3 years and can be removed whenever you choose.
How the coil pathway works
A coil is never fitted on the day of your consultation — a couple of quick steps come first, so your fitting is safe and straightforward.
Consultation with Dr Rekha
A 20-minute appointment to talk through your options and medical history, and decide whether a coil or implant is right for you. No coil is fitted today, and you're free not to proceed.
Pregnancy test (Beta hCG)
A Beta hCG pregnancy test is required before any coil or implant is fitted. We can do this for you for £100, or you can arrange it elsewhere.
STI screening
An STI screen is also required first. Use the free NHS route via Frisky Wales (results in around 4 weeks), or our STI Complete screen with Dr Rekha (£164) — which lets us book your fitting within 7 working days of your results.
Your coil or implant is fitted
Once your pregnancy test and STI screen are complete, your Mirena, copper coil or Nexplanon implant is fitted in a relaxed appointment, with full aftercare advice.

Every coil and implant price includes the device, the fitting and aftercare. An initial consultation is always required before a first fitting.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer for a contraception consultation or coil/implant fitting directly online or by phone — no GP letter needed.
Which coils and implants do you fit?
We fit the Mirena (hormonal IUS), copper coils, and the Nexplanon arm implant. All fittings are carried out by a female GP trained in fitting, after an initial suitability check.
Is the device cost included in the price?
Yes. Our coil and implant prices are all-inclusive — you pay one price for the device, the fitting procedure and aftercare. There are no hidden device fees.
Do I need a consultation before my fitting?
Yes — an initial consultation with Dr Rekha is always required before a first fitting, to check suitability, talk through your options and make sure you're comfortable. A coil is never fitted on the same day as your consultation.
What tests do I need before my coil is fitted?
Before any coil fitting you'll need a Beta hCG pregnancy test and an STI screen. You can use the free NHS route via Frisky Wales (results take around 4 weeks), or our STI Complete screen with Dr Rekha (£164), which lets us book your fitting within 7 working days. We can do the Beta hCG test for £100, or you can arrange it elsewhere. Insertion can't be booked until both are complete.
Can my coil be fitted the same day as my consultation?
No. The consultation is a separate appointment, and your pregnancy test and STI screen must be completed first. Once your results are in, we book your fitting — usually within 7 working days if you use our fast-track STI screen.
Does having a coil or implant fitted hurt?
Most women feel some cramping during a coil fitting, similar to period pain, which settles quickly. An implant is placed under local anaesthetic so you'll only feel a small scratch. We take our time and you can ask us to pause at any point.
How long do they last?
A Mirena coil lasts up to 8 years, a copper coil up to 10 years, and a Nexplanon implant up to 3 years. All can be removed earlier whenever you choose.
Can my coil be removed the same day?
Coil removal can usually be done same-day if needed. If you'd like a new coil fitted at the same visit, we can often do a removal and replacement together.
Will I see a female GP?
Yes. Our women's health consultations and fittings are carried out by our GP, Dr Rekha, so you'll be seen by a woman — there's no need to request it.
I think my coil has moved — what should I do?
Book a lost coil location ultrasound. It quickly confirms whether your coil is correctly placed, and if it has moved we can arrange removal or replacement in-house. Use additional contraception until you know.
