Dupuytren's happens when the fascia under the skin of the palm thickens into cords that slowly pull one or more fingers down toward the palm. If any of these sound familiar, you may benefit from assessment.

What to expect week by week.
Dupuytren's recovery takes a little longer than other hand procedures — hand therapy makes the difference to the final result.
Surgery day
30-45 minute procedure. Home in 1-2 hours with the hand dressed and elevated. Mild soreness eased with paracetamol.
Rest & elevate
Keep the hand elevated to settle swelling. Gentle finger movement as advised. Many desk workers ease back within the first week or two.
Sutures out
Quick clinic visit. Hand therapy begins in earnest, with exercises and often a night splint to hold the finger straight.
Hand therapy
Regular stretches and splint wear. Scar softening. Manual and heavier hand use returns gradually across these weeks.
Getting back to normal
Movement and grip continue to improve. Scar fading. Most everyday function restored.
Full recovery
A much straighter, more usable finger. Your surgeon advises on the small chance of recurrence over the longer term.

Do I need surgery for Dupuytren's?
Not always. Early Dupuytren's — a nodule or cord without a bent finger — often just needs monitoring, and there is no rush to operate.
Surgery is recommended once a finger can no longer straighten, for example when you cannot lay your hand flat on a table. Mr Maclean advises on the right timing at your consultation.
Is it done under general anaesthetic?
No. Dupuytren's release is performed under local anaesthetic as a day case. You stay awake and go home the same day.

How long is the recovery?
Recovery is more involved than for trigger finger or carpal tunnel. Sutures come out at 10-14 days, and hand therapy with a night splint is usually needed for several weeks to keep the finger straight.
Many people return to desk work within a week or two, with full hand use over 6-12 weeks.
Can Dupuytren's come back after surgery?
Dupuytren's is a progressive condition, and it can recur or appear in other fingers over time, even after successful surgery.
