Inflamed thumb tendons in their sheath.

Trigger finger

Thickened A1 pulley, tendon nodule.

Many wrist and hand problems we identify can be treated with an ultrasound-guided injection in the same visit. For carpal tunnel surgery, see our carpal tunnel clinic.

Before your scan

Preparation

No preparation needed

How to prepare

Remove rings & watches before the scan if comfortable to do so.
Eat and drink normally no fasting required.
Take usual medications no need to stop anything.
Bring previous imaging if you have any prior X-rays or MRI.

No special prep. Rings and watches make scanning awkward — remove if you can.

If you have rheumatoid arthritis or similar, please mention it — we'll do a more thorough joint survey.

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about hand & wrist ultrasound

How much does a private hand and wrist ultrasound cost?

£260 for one side, £360 for both.

Can ultrasound diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome?

Yes — ultrasound shows an enlarged median nerve at the wrist, a classic finding in carpal tunnel. We measure the nerve's cross-sectional area.

Do I need nerve conduction studies?

Ultrasound is now considered equivalent or superior to nerve conduction for diagnosing carpal tunnel. We can advise on next steps.

How long does the scan take?

About 30 minutes per side.

Can I get a steroid injection at the same time?

Yes — we can inject the carpal tunnel, De Quervain's, trigger finger, thumb base joint, ganglion cysts. Same visit.

Is the scan painful?

No — just a probe with gel on your skin. We work around tender areas.

Do I need a referral?

No — self-refer online or by phone.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most appointments within 48-72 hours.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes — no radiation.

Will I get a written report?

Yes — immediate verbal results plus written report in 24-48 hours.

What if I need carpal tunnel surgery?

We can refer to our specialist carpal tunnel clinic at Acorn for surgical assessment.

Where do I go?
