At Acorn, a consultant sonographer carries out an antral follicle count and assesses your ovarian reserve, uterus and endometrium, explaining what they see as they scan. You'll leave with a written report and digital images you can share with any IVF clinic.

Reasons to book a fertility scan
How to prepare
- Tell us your cycle dates when you book. An antral follicle count is usually done early in your cycle (around days 2-5), so we can time your scan for the clearest baseline.
- For the external scan, drink 1.5 pints of water in the hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder.
- For the internal scan, empty your bladder just beforehand — this gives the clearest view of your follicles and ovaries.
- Bring any relevant results, such as an AMH or hormone profile, or paperwork from your IVF clinic.
A female chaperone is always present for transvaginal scans. If you'd rather have the external scan only, choose that option when you book.

Fertility scan questions
What does a fertility scan show?
It gives an antral follicle count (the number of resting follicles in each ovary), an indication of your ovarian reserve, and a full assessment of your uterus, ovaries and endometrium. Together this forms a clear fertility baseline.
Should I have an AMH blood test too?
An AMH blood test (from £120) and an antral follicle count together give the most complete picture of your ovarian reserve. Many women choose to do both at the same visit.
When in my cycle should I be scanned?
An antral follicle count is usually done early in your cycle, around days 2-5. Tell us your cycle dates when you book and we'll time your scan for the clearest baseline. Follicle tracking is scanned across several visits.
Do you offer follicle tracking?
Yes. Follicle tracking follows your lead follicle as it grows across the cycle, which usually means more than one appointment. It's planned around your cycle and priced per cycle — call us on 029 2199 9300 to arrange.
Will I get a report I can give my IVF clinic?
Yes. You'll receive a written report and digital images that you can share with any IVF or fertility clinic, along with the findings explained at your appointment.
Can you scan me in early pregnancy?
Yes. We offer early pregnancy scans to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy and check viability. Tell us what you're looking for when you book so we can plan the right scan.
Is the internal scan painful?
It's mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The probe is narrow, gently inserted, and used with a sterile cover and lubricant. You can ask us to stop at any point.
Will the clinician be female?
Tell us when you book and we'll do what we can to arrange it. A female chaperone is present for every internal (transvaginal) scan regardless.
Do I need a GP referral, and how quickly can I be seen?
No referral needed — this is a self-referral scan you can book online. Most appointments are available within days, timed to suit your cycle.
