What we can identify

Neck ultrasound is the first-line imaging test for thyroid problems and neck lumps.

Thyroid nodules

Classified using TIRADS — benign vs suspicious features.

Goitre (thyroid enlargement)

Diffuse or multinodular.

Thyroid cysts

Simple or complex.

Thyroiditis

Autoimmune (Hashimoto's), de Quervain's, postpartum.

Lymph nodes

Reactive vs suspicious patterns.

Parathyroid adenoma

If hyperparathyroidism suspected.

If a nodule needs sampling, we arrange a fine-needle aspiration biopsy with a specialist.

Before your scan

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about neck & thyroid ultrasound

How much does a neck or thyroid ultrasound cost?

£260 all-inclusive for either scan.

Should I book Neck or Thyroid?

If your concern is the thyroid gland itself (swelling, nodules, function), book Thyroid. If it's a lump in the neck not clearly thyroid, or lymph nodes, book Neck. Both are £260.

Can ultrasound diagnose thyroid cancer?

Ultrasound identifies features that increase suspicion of cancer. A definitive diagnosis requires biopsy (fine-needle aspiration). Most thyroid nodules are benign.

How are nodules classified?

We use TIRADS (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System) — an international scoring system from TIRADS 1 (benign) to TIRADS 5 (highly suspicious).

How long does the scan take?

About 20-30 minutes.

Do I need a referral?

No — self-refer.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most appointments within 48-72 hours.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes — no radiation, safe in pregnancy.

Will I get a written report?

Yes — immediate verbal results plus written report in 24-48 hours.

My TSH is abnormal — do I need a scan?

If TSH is abnormal AND you have a goitre or nodule, yes. If just abnormal blood test, a scan helps assess thyroiditis or structural change.

Can ultrasound check thyroid function?

No — function is checked by blood tests (TSH, T4). Ultrasound shows STRUCTURE.

Where do I go?
