Pain that comes on suddenly over minutes or hours, especially with swelling, sickness or a testicle that sits higher than usual, can be testicular torsion. The blood supply is cut off and it needs surgery within hours to save the testicle. Do not wait for an outpatient appointment. Go straight to A&E or call 999.

What we can identify
Ultrasound is the first-line test for any scrotal symptom. Testicular cancer is uncommon, and it is one of the most curable cancers there is when it is found early.
Testicular tumour
A solid mass inside the testicle, which triggers an urgent urology referral.
Epididymal cyst
Very common, and almost always benign.
Hydrocele
Fluid around the testicle, usually benign.
Varicocele
Enlarged veins, which can affect fertility.
Epididymitis & orchitis
Infection of the epididymis or the testicle itself.
Microlithiasis
Tiny calcium deposits, where follow-up is sometimes recommended.
Worth knowing: most lumps men find turn out to be around the testicle rather than in it, and those are usually harmless. A lump within the testicle is the one that needs prompt assessment. If we suspect a cancer, we arrange urgent urology referral the same day. Either way, don't sit on a new lump, and don't let embarrassment delay you. How to prepare
No special prep. The scan takes 20 to 30 minutes and always covers both sides, because comparing one with the other is how subtle changes get picked up.
A male chaperone is always available, and the scan is carried out with your dignity and privacy in mind.

The scan (20-30 mins)
You lie on your back with a towel for cover, and warm gel is applied. Both sides are scanned and compared, which is how subtle differences between them are picked up. Only the area being scanned is uncovered.
Immediate results
Your consultant explains the findings as they scan and again at the end, so you leave knowing what's going on. Written report follows within 24-48 hours.

How much does a private testicular ultrasound cost?

Will the scan tell me if I have cancer?
Ultrasound is very good at telling a solid mass inside the testicle apart from the harmless things that sit around it, and it is the test that decides whether anything further is needed. A definitive diagnosis needs surgery and histology, so a scan cannot confirm cancer on its own. Most lumps men find are not cancer: epididymal cysts, varicoceles and hydroceles are all far more common.
I have sudden severe pain, should I book a scan?
No. Sudden severe testicular pain needs A&E now, not an outpatient scan. It can be testicular torsion, which needs surgery within hours to save the testicle. Booking a scan for a later date could cost you that window.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can self-refer. Book online in 60 seconds.
How quickly can I be seen?
Most appointments are available within 48-72 hours, and urgent slots are sometimes available same-day. If you have found a lump, call 029 2199 9300 and say so.
What if you find something suspicious?

No. It is gentle probe pressure with gel, and we work carefully around any tender area.

Will the doctor be male?
Yes. Testicular scans are performed by a male consultant, and a male chaperone is always present.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, and does no harm to fertility.
What is a varicocele?
Enlarged veins in the scrotum, common in young men and usually on the left. They are often painless but can cause a heavy, dragging feeling, and they are sometimes linked to reduced fertility. We measure the veins and grade them so a urologist has what they need if treatment is being considered.
Will I get a written report?
