What we examine

The hip & surrounding tissues

A focused scan of the tendons, bursae and soft tissues around the hip — particularly useful for groin and lateral hip pain.

Gluteal tendons

Gluteus medius/minimus tears (lateral hip pain).

Trochanteric bursa

Bursitis, swelling, fluid.

Iliopsoas tendon

Tendonitis, snapping hip.

Adductor tendons

Groin strains, enthesopathy.

Rectus femoris

Origin tears, tendinopathy.

Hip joint

Effusion (fluid in the joint).

Lymph nodes (groin)

Reactive or suspicious nodes.

Inguinal canal

Quick check for hernia features.

Common reasons people book

If you have any of these, a hip scan can help

Lateral hip pain (side of hip)
Groin pain or 'pull'
Snapping or clicking hip
Difficulty lying on the side
Suspected gluteal tendon tear
Trochanteric bursitis pain
Post-sports hip strain
Limping or altered gait
Conditions detected

What we can identify

Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissue around the hip. For internal joint problems, hip MRI is the gold standard.

Gluteal tendinopathy & tears

The #1 cause of lateral hip pain in women over 40.

Trochanteric bursitis

Inflamed bursa over the side of the hip.

Adductor strain

'Groin pull' — common in footballers.

Iliopsoas bursitis

Front-of-hip pain, snapping sensation.

Hip joint effusion

Fluid suggesting arthritis or infection.

Rectus femoris injury

Tear at the muscle origin.

For full hip joint assessment (cartilage, labrum, bone) we recommend our private hip MRI.

Before your scan

Preparation

No preparation needed

How to prepare

Wear loose clothing shorts or a loose skirt — we need access to the hip and groin.
Eat and drink normally no fasting required.
Take usual medications no need to stop anything.
Bring imaging if you have it previous X-rays or MRI very helpful.

No special prep. The scan involves examining the side, front and back of the hip — loose clothing makes this easier.

A same-sex chaperone is always available if you'd prefer one in the room.

★★★★★

Had been waiting ages on the NHS to get a scan… so when I saw this service available on the high street I was surprised. Scan was organised for the same week, totally worth it. Actually got a diagnosis for once. Dr Junaid was very thorough and explained everything.

FAQ

Common questions about hip ultrasound scan

How much does a private hip ultrasound cost?

£260 for one hip, £360 for both (save £160).

Do I need a GP referral?

No — self-refer.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most appointments within 48-72 hours.

Ultrasound vs MRI for the hip — which?

Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissue (tendons, bursae) and is dynamic. MRI is essential for internal joint problems (labral tear, cartilage, bone). We can advise which suits your symptoms.

Can ultrasound diagnose hip arthritis?

Ultrasound shows joint effusion (fluid) which is a sign of arthritis, but X-ray and MRI assess cartilage and bone in detail.

What's the difference between hip pain and groin pain?

Hip pain on the side is usually gluteal tendinopathy. Groin pain at the front can be adductor strain, iliopsoas problem, or a referred pain. Ultrasound helps differentiate.

How long does the scan take?

About 30 minutes per hip plus consultation.

Can I get an injection at the same time?

Yes — if the consultant finds an injectable problem (bursitis, gluteal tendinopathy), they can perform an ultrasound-guided injection in the same visit.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes — no radiation.

Do I need to prepare?

No special prep. Just wear loose clothing or shorts.

Will I get a report?

Yes — immediate verbal results plus written report in 24-48 hours.

Where can I be scanned?

Acorn Private Clinic at Penarth (CF64 2AD).
