No — all adult ultrasound scans are self-refer at Acorn Private Clinic. You can book online directly in 60 seconds. The one exception is children's (paediatric) scans, which require a referral letter from a GP, paediatrician or other clinician — email this to contact@acornprivateclinic.co.uk before booking.

Most appointments are available within 48 hours at our Penarth clinic, and many scans (including urgent ones like DVT) can often be done same-day — mention urgency when you book or call us directly.

Ultrasound is completely painless and radiation-free. A warm gel is applied to the skin, and a probe is moved over the area. The only mild pressure you might feel is when the consultant presses to get a clearer image of specific structures. Internal pelvic scans (transvaginal) are slightly less comfortable but still painless — these are always optional and only done when clinically helpful.

The consultant explains all findings immediately at your appointment — no waiting. A detailed written report is then emailed to you (and your GP, if you'd like) within 24-48 hours. You also receive digital images of the scan.

We're recognised by most UK insurers including Bupa, AXA, Vitality, WPA and Benenden. Each insurer has different rules about which scans are covered and whether they need pre-authorisation — please check with your insurer before your appointment. You can also book directly and submit our detailed receipt to your insurer afterwards.

£260 for any single body area, all-inclusive (no hidden fees). If you need two areas in one appointment, the bundle price is £360 — a £160 saving versus two separate appointments. Common combinations include abdomen + pelvis, knee + thigh, or both shoulders. A £50 deposit secures your appointment, the balance is taken at the clinic on the day.
